The Washington Independent Review of Books interview with Leslie Maitland regarding the challenges involved in writing intimately and honestly about one’s own family just went online. This was interviewer Annette Gendler’s first probing question:
Crossing the Borders of Time is an extraordinary story because it is true. However, writers of family memoirs often struggle with writing about people near and dear to them, and worry how those people will feel when private details are revealed. Did you struggle at all with this? Did you consider taking the easier route of fictionalizing it?

Crossing the Borders of Time received some wonderful coverage in Freiburg this summer! First the Freiburger Amtsblatt, the newspaper that the city of Freiburg sends to all households, very graciously devoted a full page to the book. A couple whose son lives in Freiburg brought me the paper when I spoke in July at Barnes & Noble in Bethesda. A small world, indeed. I was so pleased with the story, and only wished Sigmar and Alice could see it! Here’s the link to the paper. Scroll to page 5.
Adding to that, the regional newspaper, The Badische Zeitung, also gave a terrific full page to the book! Their thoughtful account was written by Alexander Preker and was published in August. Both papers ran a lovely array of photos, as well. Many thanks to all involved for this beautiful coverage! The link to the Zeitung piece is here.

Between Mom (L) and me is Karin Hill (a photographer for The NYT in Germany). On the right is Walter Preker, still the mayor’s indefatigable press secretary, though City Hall has changed hands several times.

After breaking stories on the FBI’s undercover “Abscam” inquiry into corruption in Congress, she moved to The New York Times Washington Bureau to cover the Justice Department. Among other projects since leaving The Times, she began extensive research for this nonfiction book, including five reporting trips to Europe, one to Cuba, and another to Canada. A graduate of the University of Chicago and the Harvard Divinity School, she has regularly appeared on the Diane Rehm Show on NPR to discuss literature. The mother of a son and daughter, Maitland lives in Bethesda, Maryland with her husband and a 12-pound Cockapoo named Thisbe. She has presented illustrated programs on Crossing the Borders of Time to audiences nationwide and connects with book clubs over Skype.
